MIDDLE-EAST After four days of war, Jordan and Egypt accept the United Nations cease-fire. Israeli forces drive across the Sinai to the Suez Canal, break the Gulf of Aqaba blockade; take the Old City of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. LAGOS CRISIS Some ten thousand Nigerian men and women volunteer for the Army after the eastern state, Biafra, declares its independence. The government declared unofficial war, saying Biafra would be "crushed." LOTTERY New York State legalizes gambling by lottery, putting the first tickets on sale. It's a monthly million-dollar gamble to benefit education. Even losers are eligible for an annual quarter-million dollar "booby prize!" AIR STRIKES U.S. Navy "Skyhawk" jets blast river boats and bridges over North Vietnam. They operate from the carrier "Kittyhawk" to destroy vital links used by the Vietcong to transport men and supplies. ANTI-SHAH RIOTS Two thousand anti-Shah demonstrators clash with police outside the Berlin Opera House. The students denounce the Shah of Iran as a "murderer." One Killed, 44 injured during the violence. DENTAL TRAINING In Japan, school-children observe annual "Dental Health Week" with mass demonstrations of proper brushing and care of teeth. 12,000 kids gather in Tokyo to massage their molars, en masse. CLAY-ATHLETES Former champ Cassius Clay meets with nine top Negro athletes but remains firm on his anti-Army stand. Jimmy Brown says Clay's attitude is sincere, based wholly on his Black Muslim religion. DUTCH GRAND PRIX Jim Clark, Scotland, wins the Dutch Grand Prix, registering the fastest one-lap time of the race. Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, and John Surtees all go out with engine trouble.
