Find the Word Stem: Use "?" at the end of a word to allow for different word endings
Example: health? -- will find health, healthy, healthier, healthcare, etc.
Note: Some databases other than Franklin use *, $, ?
Use Quotation Marks for phrases.
Examples: "united states" “20th century”
Connectors:
· Use AND when you want both terms to appear in the record. This focuses your search and provides more specific results.
Example: health AND Latvia
· Use OR when you want either term to appear in the record. Use OR when a concept can be expressed using several words.
Example: health OR medicine
Parentheses: Use parentheses to construct complex searches. Think of synonyms for a concept, connect them with OR, and place them inside parenthesis. Repeat the process and connect concepts with AND.
Example: (health? or medic? or disease?) AND (latvia? or baltic? or CIS or “former soviet republic”)
Subject Keyword Option: If you get a very large number of results try to make your search more manageable by doing a subject keyword search.
