Penn Libraries Student Employment Guidelines: Training: Start with your supervisor

Start with your supervisor

Every area in the Libraries has a focus and different way of doing things. Therefore, training at your job will begin with your supervisor training you in the specific aspects of work in your area.

Below are some tips for making sure YOU get the most out of training with your supervisor:

  • Get to know procedures and policies in the area where you are working.
  • Learn your limits: Check with your supervisor to make sure you know when you should hand off work to him/her or another full-time staff member. Some work is not appropriate for student employees.
  • Identify resources: Below are four question you can ask your supervisor to be certain you are prepared to begin work:

  1. What are the top ten questions my customers ask?

  2. Where do I find the answers to those questions?

  3. Who can help me if I don’t know the answer to a question?

  4. What do I need to do to remember this information?

  • When in doubt, ask!
