Mapping & GIS: GIS Workshops

Mapping and Geographic Information Systems are systems for understanding spatial information

Past Workshops

Past Workshops, 2020

Title: Building Geographic Heat Map

Description: A heat map is a two-dimensional representation of information with the help of colors. Heat maps are capable of displaying complex data in a simple visual format making them a useful tool for data analysis. In this workshop, you will learn how to create a heat map of densities based on values assigned to locations specified by latitude and longitude coordinates or other standard geographic location descriptors such as zip code, state, country, and region using various software tools.

Date: 2:00pm - 3:00pm, Thursday, September 10, 2020

Location: Zoom link upon registration

Register: https://libcal.library.upenn.edu/event/7050939

For this workshop, make sure:

1. You have Microsoft EXCEL installed on your computer

2. Signup for Tableau account. Tableau offers free one-year Tableau licenses to students and staff at accredited academic institutions. Signup at https://www.tableau.com/academic/students

3.Signup for free mapbox account at https://account.mapbox.com/auth/signup/

Title: Intro to QGIS

Description: In this workshop, you will learn: GIS data models and formats, explore the various components of the free and open source QGIS interface and tools, creating a new map, adding data layers, changing layer symbol and display properties, setting layer symbol, creating map layouts with legends, titles, north arrows, and other map elements.

Download and install QGIS: https://qgis.org/en/site/

Date: 2:00pm - 3:30pm, Friday, September 11, 2020

Location: Zoom link upon registration

Title: Spatial Relational Database Management Systems

Description: A database management system is a mechanism that allows data to be stored in such a way that it becomes easy to organize, retrieve, manipulate, and secure the data. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and its spatial extensions - PostGIS and SpatiaLite.
