U.S. Land Use and Land Cover

Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLC) National Land Cover Database (NLCD) The Multi-Resolution Land Characterization (MRLC) consortium is a group of federal agencies who coordinate and generate consistent and relevant land cover information at the national scale for a wide variety of environmental, land management, and modeling applications.

Historical Land Use

Enhanced Historical Land-Use and Land-Cover Data Sets of the U.S. Geological Survey Historical land-use and land-cover data, available from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the conterminous United States and Hawaii, have been enhanced for use in geographic information systems (GIS) applications. The original digital data sets were created by the USGS in the late 1970s and early 1980s and were later converted by USGS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to a geographic information system (GIS) format in the early 1990s.

National Land Cover Dataset 1992 (NLCD 1992) Derived from the early to mid-1990s Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite data, the National Land Cover Data (NLCD) is a 21-class land cover classification scheme applied consistently over the United States. The spatial resolution of the data is 30 meters and mapped in the Albers Conic Equal Area projection, NAD 83. The NLCD are provided on a state-by-state basis.

There are datasets from 1992, 2001, 2006, and 2011. Many of these can also be downloaded from the National Map: viewer.nationalmap.gov

ISLSCP II Historical Land Cover and Land Use The Historical Land Cover and Land Use data set consists of two files, and was developed to provide the global change community with historical land use estimates. The data set describes historical land use changes over a 300-year historical period (1700-1990).

Agriculture

National Agricultural Statistics Service Part of the US Department of Agriculture. It provides maps, charts, and historical data about crops, livestock, economics, and research. Historical data goes back to 1970. It also includes an agricultural chemical use database that allows the user to map a specific crop and the amount of pesticides used to treat it.
US Department of Agriculture (USDA) data products  Includes links to maps and data sets for a variety of USDA data.
Livestock Geo-Wiki In a multi-partner collaboration centered on the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB-LUBIES), global maps of livestock distributions and production systems are being revised and updated.
The Geo-Wiki is used to provide a central viewer, validation tool and repository for these data.
