Recently, the Dental Library hosted a workshop provided by Subin George, Bioinformatics & Information Services Intern at the Biomedical Library, and Manuel de la Cruz Gutierrez, PhD, Research and Knowledge Management Liaison Librarian, on National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) tools and databases. Subin briefly reviewed molecular biology and genetics and NCBI tools and databases. The class revisited some of the concepts of general biology- for example the structural differences in DNA and RNA. He also reviewed the central dogma of molecular biology and the different genetic variations as part of the topics in genetics. In addition to an overview, Subin provided the attendees with a live demonstration of select tools and databases. As part of the live exercise, he focused on tools such as BLAST- a search tool for finding similar sequences in other species, iCn3D- a tools used to view 3D protein structures, and ClinVar - a database that is known for making relationship between diseases and human genetic variations.
