Newly on display in the Leon Levy Dental Medicine Library is the exhibit “Thomas Evans and the Professional Press”. The exhibit began on September 5, 2018 and will run until April 12, 2019.
A proud supporter of the school, Thomas Evans was well-known as both a dentist in Europe’s courts and as a confidant of Napoleon III. A lesser known fact about Evans, however, was that he was an avid reader of contemporary printed dental works, especially periodical literature. This exhibit revolves around the articles and advertisements that would appear within the periodicals of the day. As you explore this exhibit, you will see the contents of periodicals that dentists just like you would have read back in Evans’ day.
One of the items featured in this exhibit, The Semi-Annual Dental Expositor, is a journal written by Solyman Brown. A product of its time, it not only features an advertisement for his own practice but his own poetry about dentistry.
Another item is Brown’s Quarterly Dental Expositor: Devoted to the Interests of Dental Science and Art, which allows the viewer to see the tools used by the dentists of the 19th century. This item stands out as illustrated advertisements were very expensive to print prior to the Civil War.
