Fisher's Complicated Relationship with Electrical Outlets & Power Cords

by Hannah Bennett on 2018-11-05T17:35:56-05:00 in Architecture | 0 Comments

A typical question received through the Fisher's virtual suggestion box is why we cannot supply power to every study seat in the reading room. Many folks suggest handing out power cords upon request to mitigate the power issue.  Second to Van Pelt, the Fisher is the busiest library and patrons often plant themselves here for the entire day or night.  And most nights, every seat is taken.  It is completely understandable that patrons need ways to keep their computers or phones charged without giving up their favorite study spot!  So why isn't Fisher addressing this need with more electrical outlets or power cords? Simply put, the building cannot handle it.  The Fisher Fine Arts Library is powered by an aging electrical infrastructure. Consequentially, we must be careful with the demands put upon it so as to avoid blown breakers and power outages. Moreover, stressing the system with too much demand combined with the age-old workaround of daisy-chaining power strips together creates a fire hazard.  Until the building has a significant upgrade, staff and patrons will have to work within the limitations of our wonderful 19th century space.
