Managing Your Qualitative Data with NVivo
September 29, 2025 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Online

Differences between Windows NVivo and Mac NVivo

There are substantial differences between the two versions of the software. The Windows version is the only option offered at Penn and it is substantially more robust than the windows option. The NVivo guide provides additional information about the differences between the Mac and Windows versions.

AI Assistant in NVivo 15

NVivo 15 has a new feature called AI Assistant. This feature is disabled automatically for enterprise licenses, such as the Libraries access through the virtual lab.

If you are using your own purchased license of NVivo 15, you can access the feature by logging into your account through the app. This will enable the summarize and suggest code features available with the Assistant.

About NVivo

NVivo is software that supports qualitative and mixed methods analysis of textual and audiovisual data sources. You can use it to:

  • Organize and code multiple data sources in one project file.
  • Assign attributes to data and compare them.
  • Interpret, query, and visualize data.

Penn community members have access to NVivo 15 for Windows through all Penn Libraries' public computing stations and the Libraries Virtual Lab.

You must first register for access to Virtual Lab (called Windows App). Once you have received confirmation, you can access NVivo for Windows through the lab. DO NOT save any projects or documents on the virtual lab interface, as the storage is temporary. Using the desktop version of the software, you can map the desktop version of our Virtual Lab to your computer's hard drive and save your files on your hard drive. Watch this video to learn how to map your harddrive. Always save your project file at least every 15 minutes.

Getting Started

Mapping your hard drive to the VLab and project set up

This is a rough demo of mapping your hard drive to the virtual lab and setting up a project in NVivo. If you have questions about virtual lab, please contact the Library IT at libhelpdesk@pobox.upenn.edu
