India GIS Datasets / ML Infomap: India Census GIS Datasets

India GIS Datasets are licensed from ML Infomap Pvt Ltd for use by current University of Pennsylvania students, faculty, and staff. They are not licensed by the Penn Libraries for use by individuals who are not current Penn students, faculty, or staff. Non-Penn people who are interested in using India GIS Datasets should contact ML Infomap Pvt Ltd for pricing and licensing information.

These datasets are GIS shapefiles for District demographic profiles of the population of India, reported for Districts, India's second-level administrative geography. The datasets fall into two categories:

• Decennial Census datasets. 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011. These are produced by ML Infomap Pvt Ltd from data provided by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.
• Non-Decennial Census datasets. 1983, 1987, 1993, 2004, 2009. These are produced by ML Infomap Pvt Ltd from data provided by State Gazetteer notifications, State and District government websites, LG Directory. District Census Handbooks, and Reserve Bank of India notifications.

Datasets include attribute data for District, State or Union Territory, number of households, total population, population below 6 years, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, literates, and illiterates, with gender, rural, and urban breakouts for each topic.
