RIMS II : Regional Input-Output Multipliers datasets: Home

The Regional Input-Output Modeling System (RIMS II) multipliers provide a measure of the effects of local demand shocks on total gross output, value added, earnings, and employment. RIMS II multipliers were developed by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis as a tool to help economists analyze the potential impacts of economic activities on regional economies. They are now used by investors, planners, and elected officials to objectively assess the potential of economic impacts of various projects within a single region.

Regional input-output multipliers are based on a detailed set of industry accounts that measure the goods and services produced by each industry and the use of these goods and services by industries and final users. The annual RIMS II multipliers use current-year regional data in combination with the most-recent-year national benchmark input-output tables, so the 2019 RIMS II multipliers use 2019 regional data with 2012 national benchmark data.

RIMS II multipliers file structure

The RIMS II multipliers are provided for a single region that is a county or a group of counties : Combined Statistical Area, Metropolitan Statistical Area, Metropolitan Division, County. RIMS II multipliers are not available for a whole state.

RIMS II multipliers are provided in two types:

• Type I multipliers = Multipliers that account for only the interindustry effects (direct and indirect) of a final-demand change.
• Type II multipliers = Multipliers that account for both the interindustry effects (direct and indirect) and household-spending effects (induced) of a final-demand change.

Each region's RIMS II multipliers may be downloaded as a single ZIP archive. The archive has these files:
