For the last several years, the cataloging and metadata community has been discussing the problem of bias in library catalogs. Once thought to be a neutral activity, cataloging done by human beings carries their biases, as well as the biases of widely used cataloging tools such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).
Penn Libraries approach to addressing these historical and systemic issues will be an ongoing project in support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in order to fully address racial, and other, forms of bias now and in the future.
