Japan

About Japan’s Scholarly Landscape

  • This landscape is still print-based (though increasingly digital)
  • Print resources include:
    • New scholarly and popular monographs and edited volumes
    • Reprints (fukkokuban 復刻版) of primary sources (journals, newspapers, documents)
    • Compendia: e.g., zenshū 全集, chosakushū 著作集, senshū 選集, taikei 大系, etc.
    • Reference works (especially indexes and similar—e.g., mokuroku 目録, sakuin 索引, sōsakuin 総索引, sōran 総覧, etc.)
    • Dictionaries for every imaginable topic
    • Scholarly journals and popular magazines
    • Kiyō 紀要 (reports/research notes—can be university in-house publication) and other “gray literature”
