Accessing Proquest Historical newspapers: Home

Browse a series of newspaper issues by date, and read through a newspaper page by page.

Browse a newspaper by date:

  1. Click on the link for a specific newspaper.
  2. Click on the "Advanced Search" link to toggle away from the basic search.
  3. On the Advance Search interface, use the "Publication Date" option to choose "Specific Date Range."
  4. A) For newspapers published daily, which include all of the mainstream newspapers and some of the Black newspapers, select identical start and end dates. For example, Start: Dec. 8, 1941; End: Dec. 8, 1941. B) For newspapers published less frequently (the Atlanta Daily World is the only Black newspaper that was published daily in December of 1941), select start and end dates a week apart. The graph of results by day will indicate which day to choose.
  5. Use a search term or not, as you prefer, and click "Search."
  6. Click on an article.

Read a newspaper page by page:

  1. After completing the above steps, or at any point when you are looking at a specific article, click on the link to the left of the article called "Page View--PDF"
  2. You can now see the entire page, flip through the pages or go to a specific page, and magnify pages.
  3. Click on the downward pointing arrow in the image viewer to download a page as a PDF and see it most clearly. The "Download PDF" icon only downloads a specific article.
