This annual BJS Bulletin presents characteristics of persons under sentence of death and of persons executed. 1971-present.

NACJD dataset. Describes each individual executed and the circumstances surrounding the crime for which the person was convicted. Includes age, race, name, sex, and occupation of the offender, place, jurisdiction, date, and method of execution.

Database of all executions in the U.S. since 1976.

Calculates recidivism rates for persons released from state prisons in 30 states in 2005 and followed for five years. Also see:

From the Correctional Education Association, study in Maryland, Minnesota, and Ohio designed to measure the effect of prison education on recidivism.

Dataset reporting people released to Philadelphia from Philadelphia Department of Prisons and Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, being people who have been charged with a criminal non-summary type offense in the Philadelphia adulut justice system.

Data from a nationally representative sample of local jails on jail inmate populations, jail capacity, etc. Began in 1982 and has been conducted annually except for 1983, 1988, 1993, 1999, and 2005 in which a complete census of U.S. local jails was conducted.

Collects jurisdictional level information on inmates, facility characteristics, staff;programs, and costs of incarceration. Conducted periodically since 1970.

Annual and semiannual national and state-level data on the number of prisoners in state and federal prison facilities. Aggregate data are collected on age, race, and sex, inmates held in private facilities and local jails, system capacity, noncitizens, and persons under age 18.

Formerly: Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. Collects quarterly inmate death records from each of the nation's 50 state prison systems, 50 state juvenile correctional authorities, and over 3,000 local jail jurisdictions.
