American Newspapers: Major historical newspaper databases

Scope and Tips

Note that digitized newspapers are scattered across the Internet. This guide only lists some of the most important sources. Likewise, magazines and other publications are not addressed here. Tips:

  • Newspapers are sometimes digitized by local libraries, states, universities, or other sources. These newspaper may be parts of collections or be on solitary websites. Fortunately, some people try to list as much such newspapers as are available. This site does as good a job as any I have found and can be browsed by state or ethnicity. This list supplements the databases listed here and sometimes overlaps with it, but there are unique titles list here and in the databases listed below.
  • If you know the title of the newspaper you need, try searching for it in WorldCat, a database listing the holding of items in libraries around the world. Often digital versions of newspapers are included in WorldCat records and will indicate where an online copy is available.
