Chatting Up ChatGPT: Prompts

Generative AI, Prompts, and Misinformation in Health Science Research

What Makes a Good Prompt?

To get the most accurate and relevant responses from AI tools, your prompts need to be clear, specific, and contextually rich. In health science research, it's essential to frame prompts that lead to evidence-based and scientifically accurate results.

Tips for Crafting Prompts

Tips for Crafting Prompts:

  • Be Specific: Instead of asking "Tell me about cancer research," specify the type of cancer or aspect you're interested in, such as "Summarize recent findings on immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer."
  • Provide Context: If you’re working with a specific dataset or article, include it as context for the AI to tailor its response accordingly.
  • Iterate and Refine: Don't hesitate to adjust your prompts based on the AI's response. If the answer isn't quite right, try changing your wording or adding more detail.

Training ChatGPT

Writing can be a big barrier for those conducting scientific research, so while having AI fully write your papers isn’t recommended, using it to hone your writing can be helpful (if a specific policy permits).

  1. Have ChatGPT analyze your writing style by pasting 3-5 articles you’ve actually written.
  2. Use the custom instructions or presets feature to create prompts and instructions you can reuse every time.

  3. Feed your current article draft to ChatGPT with specific editing prompts, including checking knowledge level, grammar, voice (based on the writing analysis), etc.

  4. Always make sure to fact-check!
