Here at the Vet Libraries we have the great honor of presenting a special digital collection by Dr. Oliver “OJ” Ginther, one of the premier researchers on the reproductive biology of the mare.
Dr. Ginther grew up in rural Pennsylvania, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and received an undergraduate degree from Penn State. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1961 and received a PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1967 and has worked in their school of veterinary medicine ever since.
A few years ago, Penn Vet Associate Professor, Dr. Patricia Sertich, Diplomate, American College of Theriogenologists (ACT) and a member of the ACT Certifying Examining Committee, asked the Penn Vet librarians for help in hosting and preserving a collection of classic texts for students and veterinarians interested in veterinary reproduction. As a part of this effort, Dr. Ginther offered to make his books available for digitization and online access.
The Penn Vet library has worked with Mitch Fraas and Penn Library’s Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text & Image (SCETI) team to make this online set of classic texts a reality. Five volumes have been digitized and are currently hosted on HathiTrust, a digital preservation repository where they are now freely available to a new generation of students, educators and research scientists. The remaining book and an earlier edition of Reproductive Biology of the Mare will be digitized and added to the collection.
The Penn Vet library is proud to ensure that Dr. Ginther’s important work will be preserved and will remain available to veterinarians and reproductive physiologists around the world.
