Requesting Items from Dental Stacks

Much of the Dental Library material in located in a closed stack area.  You will need to ask us to retrieve a regularly circulating Dental Library title.  Only books on reserve are housed in the Dental Library Reading Room.

Request In Person

  • Find complete information for the book you want to request, including title, author, and call number (for journals you will need the title, volume, and issue number) and fill out a book paging slip located in the black mesh bin on the Circulation Desk. Hand the paging slip to the desk attendant and ask them to retrieve the book or journal for you.

Request Online using Franklin Catalog

  • Search the Franklin catalog for your book.  Make sure you are logged in to your account (upper right-hand corner of screen. Select the “Show/Hide Availability Details” button directly below your title. Select the "Request" link found on the item record, then select the "Dental Medicine Library" as your pick up location.

Or if you would like to browse the Dental Stacks, you can request to do so at the circulation desk between 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.

Requesting a Journal Article

Online Journal Articles

  • While searching a database (e.g. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) look for the PennText button next to the desired citation. The PennText screen will tell you whether we have online access to the journal article. Look for the area labeled "View Online" click one of the options below to access the article.  You may be required to make several more clicks before accessing the article.
  • If you have been given a citation, you have several options to access the full-text article.  The first two require you to navigate to your specific article.  The third may take you directly to the article.
    • Access Browzine and search for the journal name. Then navigate to the article.
    • Access Franklin Catalog and search for the journal name. Then navigate to the article.
    • Access the PennText Article Finder form. Enter the Journal name, article title and year.

Journal Articles (Online not Available)

  • While searching a database (e.g. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) look for the PennText button next to the desired citation. The PennText screen will tell you whether we have online access to the journal article.  If there is no "View Online" message, look for the "Get It" section.  You will need to log-in to your Library account by clicking the "Sign-in" link.
  • If you have been given a citation, you can submit an Interlibrary Loan request.  You should first check Franklin to confirm we don't have have access to the journal.  Fill out the form and staff will find a library that can scan the article.  You will receive an email when the article is ready to be accessed.  If you have any questions about an interlibrary loan request that you have already submitted, e-mail staff at interlib@pobox.upenn.edu.

Requesting Material Located at Another Penn Library (LIBRA, Biomed, etc.)

Physical Book/Journal

  • Book Chapter or Journal Article

    • Search the Franklin catalog for your book.  Make sure you are logged in to your account (upper right-hand corner of screen). Select the “Show/Hide Availability Details” button directly below your title. Select the "Scan & Deliver" link found on the item record.  A request form will appear.  Enter the chapter/article title and page numbers needed and submit. Due to vendor and copyright agreements, we can only provide 50 pages at most.
  • Whole Book or Journal Volume

    • Search the Franklin catalog for your book.  Make sure you are logged in to your account (upper right-hand corner of screen. Select the “Show/Hide Availability Details” button directly below your title. Select the "Request" link found on the item record, then select the "Dental Medicine Library" as your pick up location.
