Black History Month—Gallery 240 Project

"As part of Penn Dental Medicine’s Black History Month, the Student National Dental Association (SNDA) chapter hosted its annual celebration event on February 20, 2020. A special photography exhibit was developed for the event for the Gallery 240 Project, featuring 12 student portraits with accompanying bios and visionary statements. Fourth-year student Elaf Saeed (D’20) curated the exhibit with the photography by prosthodontics resident Dr. Stephen Cross (GD’20)."

A poster about the "Seven Dental Pioneers to celebrate this Black History Month". Robert Tanner Freeman (1869): First black graduate of a US Dental School (Harvard). Son of freed slaves. Dr. George F. Grant (1871): A trained dentist, he was the first black professor at Harvard. Invented the wooden golf tee. Dr. James Brister (1881): First minority graduate of Penn Dental and first black man to earn a degree from Penn. Dr. Robert F. Boyd (1887): Physician and dentist who was born a slave, earned his dental degree from Meharry. He was later the first president of the National Medical Assocation. Dr. Ida Gray Nelson (1890): First black woman to practice dentistry in the US. DR. Olive M. Henderson (1908): First black woman to graduate from Northwestern with a dental degree. Dr. Jeanne Sinkford (1975): First female dean of a dental school, at Howard University.
