A Guide to Poster Presentations and Abstracts: Design

Want to create an effective abstract and poster for your next presentation? Find out how.

Plan Your Poster

1. Define your objectives and target audience

2. Choose a clear and concise title

3. Plan the layout and organization of your content

Design Tips

Divide the poster into columns (3-5 across, depending on poster size).

Use headings to identify sections.

Avoid long stretches of text.

Break up text with pictures, tables, figures, etc.

For visual appeal and to save space, use graphics instead of text to illustrate points.

Blank space should make up at least 35% of your poster.

Design

Ask the conference organizers poster size requirements.

What makes a good poster?

  • Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away
  • Title is short and draws interest
  • Word count of about 300 to 800 words
  • Text is clear and to the point
  • Use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read
  • Effective use of graphics, color, and fonts
  • Consistent and clean layout

QR Code

Use Quick Response (QR) codes to link to external resources such as electronic versions of posters, supplemental materials, academic papers, your personal webpage, a survey, etc. Simply scan it with your smartphone and a link should open automatically. On your poster, QR codes should be at least 5" x 5" in size.
