Using Subject Searching in Franklin to Find Autobiographies and Memoirs
Franklin, the Penn Library Catalog, is a useful resource for finding autobiographies and memoirs. You can also find bibliographies of autobiographies, memoirs, and other personal narratives, as well as works about autobiographies and memoirs as genres and historical resources. Choose "subject" from the pull-down menu next to the search box to do a subject keyword search.
You can then use the 'subject' facet or the other facets in the left-hand column to refine your results.
You can enter the search terms in any order.
For example:
Genre: Books about autobiographies and memoirs will be under the subjects "autobiographies" and "memoirs" with various subheadings.
Person: When looking for diaries by a specific person, search for "autobiography" or "memoir" along with the person's name in a subject search.
Groups of people: Search for "autobiography" or "memoir" along with country names, languages, nationalities, time periods, and/or groups of people. You can also use the language facet in the left-hand column to see results in a particular language. If you don't get any results, make your search less specific and use the facets in the left-hand column to refine your results.
Historical Events: Use the subdivision "personal narratives" under individual wars or events. You can also use the language facet in the left-hand column to see results in a particular language.
