Get Started with Tables

Description

This introductory workshop is intended for Penn undergraduate students, graduate students, predocs, postdocs, faculty, and staff who are new to organizing data in electronic spreadsheet software (e.g.: Excel). The session is suited to learners interested in using Excel as a digital tool for assignments, research, teaching, service, or the job market. This workshop provides an orientation to table-formatted data and Microsoft Excel as a step toward supporting data analysis (systematically handling and interpreting data) in Excel.

After this workshop, learners should be able to

  • Highlight a table's structure
  • Group related data
  • Insert missing content

Requirements

  1. Install Excel (for Windows) on your PC OR use the Lippincott Library’s on-site computers.
  2. Get the latest version of workshop materials.

Summarize Data

Description

This workshop is intended for Penn undergraduate students, graduate students, predocs, postdocs, faculty, and staff who have begun working in electronic spreadsheet software (e.g.: Excel) and want to summarize a dataset (find the mean, count features, etc.). The session is suited to learners interested in using Microsoft Excel as a digital tool for assignments, research, teaching, service, or the job market. This workshop provides techniques for grouping by labels and summarizing numeric (numbers) or countable content in Excel so that learners can develop reports or begin data analysis (systematically handling and interpreting data).

After this workshop, learners should be able to

  • Generate standard summary statistics
  • Split summaries by categories
  • Customize default summary tables

Requirements

  1. Prerequisite: This workshop expands on skills introduced during Get Started with Tables. Learners who attended this prior session or learned its skills elsewhere are welcome.
  2. Install Excel (for Windows) on your PC OR use the Lippincott Library’s on-site computers.
  3. Get the latest version of workshop materials.

Visualize Data

Description

This workshop is intended for Penn undergraduate students, graduate students, predocs, postdocs, faculty, and staff who have begun working in electronic spreadsheet software (e.g.: Excel) and want to communicate through data visualization (e.g.: charts; graphs). The session is suited to learners interested in using Microsoft Excel as a digital tool for assignments, research, teaching, service, or the job market. This workshop provides techniques for choosing and generating Excel Charts so that learners can express data-based insights effectively.

After this workshop, learners should be able to

  • Select visualization types with purpose
  • Format data to support Excel's charts
  • Customize visualizations for effective communication
