"Take Care of the Health of Domestic Animals”: Penn Vet answers the call to support agriculture and animal welfare

Online exhibit on the origins of Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine in supporting and continuing commitment to agriculture and animal welfare

Penn Vet’s Response to Emerging Outbreaks

  • Hog cholera was a widespread problem in 1918, causing a quarantine to be put into effect in Philadelphia and its neighboring counties.
  • In 1920, more than 500 chickens were vaccinated during an outbreak of chicken pox.
  • The increase in horse and swine patients in 1954 to 1955 reflects the beginning of Field Service at New Bolton Center which replaced the ambulatory clinic in Media, PA.

Penn Vet Supporting Large Animal Wellness

Distributed as early as the 1910s, the Vet School’s Bulletin and Announcement included reports on the cases in the large and small animal clinics each year as well as yearly tuition and fees, course descriptions, and other administrative and admissions information.

The Report of Ambulatory Clinic indicates how many horses, cattle, swine, sheep, chickens, and dogs were treated in each year and for which conditions. The repeated high numbers of cattle treated demonstrates the high demand for veterinary care for livestock, showcasing the early and continued need for and commitment of Penn Vet to care for animals used in agriculture.
