Welcome to your guide on undergraduate student research in East Asian studies! We are very happy you are here. Please use the tabs on the left side of this page to explore and discover some of the remarkable resources we have in our libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.

Library Basics

Where are the books?

  • Locations are indicated in items’ Franklin records
  • East Asian-language books will mostly be in these locations of Van Pelt-Dietrich Library:
    • East Asian Studies Seminar Room (Van Pelt 526)
    • East Asian Stacks (Van Pelt 5th floor)—includes:
      • Oversized books section—at the far end
      • Global Comics section (includes CJK)—across from Van Pelt 525.
    • LIBRA: this is the Libraries’ off-campus storage facility; you can request books via Franklin, and they will be delivered to your preferred campus library within days
    • Floor plan here

Getting Resources and More

Resource Sharing: see guide here and make requests here

  • BorrowDirect: provides books (usually within a week) from some major research libraries; best choice for Asian-language materials
  • EZBorrow:  provides books (usually within a week) from other libraries in Pennsylvania; best choice for high-demand books of wide academic interest, although the system includes the excellent East Asian library at University of Pittsburgh
  • Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery: all formats (including articles and book chapters); for books, BorrowDirect and EZ Borrow are better, with faster delivery and longer borrowing times
    • If Penn owns it, use Digital Delivery on Franklin record page; log into PennKey Library Account first
    • If Penn doesn’t own it, make request here; include as much information as you have; no diacritics
  • Accessing Electronic Resources (On and Off Campus / EZproxy): see guide here
    • EZproxy Browser Bookmarklet: instructions here
