Specifying file locations

Attending an upcoming workshop and need help specifying file locations? Check out our guide for both Mac and Windows users.

Specifying file locations

  1. On your Mac, click the Finder icon in the Dock to open a Finder window.

  1. Once in the Finder window, locate the file you’d like to specify the location for.

  2. Choose View > Show Path Bar.

The location of your file or folder is displayed near the bottom of the Finder window.

  1. To copy a folder’s pathname, control-click the folder in the path bar, then choose Copy “folder” as Pathname

When you open the files application on your computer, you will notice a bar at the top next to the search bar. This bar will tell us the navigation instructions (or location) of a file.

An example of a file location looks like:

This PC > Windows (C:) > Users > lrreilly > Downloads > name_of_file

You may also see a file location written as:

C:Users\lrreilly\Downloads\name_of_file

Both locations tell us that, in order to access my file, I will need to go to users, select lrreilly, choose the Downloads folder, and then select the file.

To copy your file’s location, also known as a path, right-click on the navigation bar and select Copy address as text. This will save the navigation instructions to your clipboard.

The following is the navigation instructions for the folder shown above: C:\Users\lrreilly\Downloads\ExcelBasics_all.zip\ExcelBasics_all
