Penn Libraries Open Access Agreements for Penn Authors: Institute of Physics (IOP)

Which articles are eligible?

The Penn Libraries has a 3-year agreement (2024-2026) with the Institute of Physics (IOP) for Penn authors to publish articles open access with no article processing fees (APCs).

Which journals are included under the agreement?

  • This agreement covers open access publication in designated IOP hybrid and gold open access journals. Hybrid journals include articles behind paywalls as well as open access articles. Gold journals are 100% open access.
  • This agreement also covers designated titles from the Electrochemical Society (ECS).
  • The corresponding author of a submitted article must be a Penn affiliated author

What types of articles are eligible under this agreement?

Eligible articles include research papers, special issue articles, letters, and review articles.

How can I tell if I am an eligible author?

My article and I are both eligible.  Do I have to publish open access?

  • No. If you have submitted your eligible article to one of IOP's hybrid journals, open access is the default option, but the corresponding author may opt out in writing within five days of being notified of open access eligibility.

How does the process work?

How does it work?

IOP determines the eligibility to publish open access in a journal listed under this agreement by the corresponding author's stated affiliation and the acceptance date of their article.  The corresponding author will receive an email message from IOP informing them that their work is eligible under this agreement with Penn Libraries and will default to open access publication upon acceptance.  The message will also include instructions to the author to contact IOP directly to opt out of this eligibility if they do not wish to publish open access.

Additional resources:

You retain copyright and your article is published under a Creative Commons license:

  • IOP will ask you to sign a copyright and license form, which grants IOP the rights to publish the article and identifies IOP as the original publisher.
  • Your article will be published under a CC BY 4.0 license.
  • Authors may opt out of open access publication in writing to IOP within five days of receipt of their notification of eligibility and publish their article behind the standard subscription based paywall instead.
