Which articles are eligible?

The Penn Libraries has a 3-year agreement (2024-2026) with Wiley for Penn authors to publish articles open access with no article processing fees (APCs).

Which journals are included under the agreement?

  • This agreement covers open access publication in Wiley's hybrid, or subscription based, journals. Hybrid journals include articles behind paywalls as well as open access articles.
  • The corresponding author of a submitted article must be a Penn affiliated author

What types of articles are eligible under this agreement?

Eligible articles are primary research and review articles

Including but not limited to:

  • Method and Protocol
  • Perspective
  • Practice and Policy
  • Rapid Publication, Research Article

Most articles falling out side the above types will not require an APC – every Wiley subscription based, hybrid title and article-type is  included in the Penn Libraries' agreement

  • Any new subscription based titles that Wiley acquires will be included in the agreement
  • Hindawi journals are not included in this agreement

The corresponding author on the submitted article must be a current Penn faculty, student, or staff with access to Penn Libraries subscribed resources

How can I tell if I am an eligible author?

Please note that this agreement is not unlimited; there is cap on the number of articles that the Penn Libraries can publish in a given year. However, the cap is expected and intended to cover our publishing output based on our previous publishing data with Wiley. If you have questions, please be in touch with your subject librarian

How does the process work?

How does it work?

Your acceptance letter will let you know that Wiley and the Penn Libraries have an agreement to fund open access fees in eligible Wiley journals for corresponding authors with a University of Pennsylvania affiliation. The acceptance letter will also include next steps.

This will include

  • Signing your license
  • Opting in for open access publication at no fee
  • You will receive a confirmation and a copy of the publishing license

Additional resources:

Assigning a Creative Commons license:

  • The options for CC licenses vary by title.
  • Most journals offer a choice between multiple CC licenses, including
  • CC BY
  • CC BY-NC
  • CC BY-NC-ND
  • Authors can reject the OA fee waiver and publish their article behind the standard subscription based paywall.

You retain your copyright when you publish your article under a Creative Commons license. Wiley will ask you to sign an Open Access Agreement, which grants a license to Wiley to publish the article and identifies Wiley as the original publisher.
