Celebrate the pioneering founders and influential figures throughout PDM's history.

Edward H. Angle ~ Father of Modern Orthodontics

PDM 1878
Dr. Edward H. Angle (1855–1930)

Dr. Edward H. Angle revolutionized dental care by founding orthodontics as a distinct specialty. He introduced the term malocclusion to describe misalignments of the teeth and developed a classification system for dental and jaw abnormalities that remains influential today. His seminal publication, Treatment of Malocclusion of the Teeth and Fractures of the Maxillae: Angle’s System, helped standardize orthodontic practices across the profession.

"What is there about this man Angle that enables him to take you ordinary guys, who were just mediocre students, and just average dentists, and make you over into mean full of enthusiasm and energy and eager to work."

Dr. Edward Kirk, distinguished dean and Dental Cosmos editor
