Germanic Languages & Literatures: Important German films - a list

This version of the Germanic Languages & Literatures Research Guide is now superseded. Please visit https://guides.library.upenn.edu/germanic. 10/23/23 CC.

Die Wichstigste Deutsche Filme - Chronologische Übersicht

This list of the most important German films is based on a list available from filmportal.de, and a project between filmportal.de and T-Online intended to identify a representation of German film culture from the beginnings of film history to the present day, including silent film, Weimar cinema, Nazi-era films, East German cinema, and New German Cinema.

Many of these films are available on DVD from the Van Pelt Video Collection, and the links below connect to the item record in Franklin, the Penn Libraries Catalog. To check out the DVD, write down the DVD call number and bring it to the Van Pelt Circulation Desk on the 1st Floor of Van Pelt. Films which list the location "LIBRA" are in off-site storage. We can deliver items from LIBRA usually within 1-2 business days.
