Integrating Oral and General Health Through Health Literacy Practices by
Oral health care and medical health care both seek to maintain and enhance human health and well-being. Yet, dentistry and primary care in the United States are largely separated and isolated from each other. Each has its own siloed systems for education, service delivery, financing, and policy oversight. The result has been duplication of effort, a cultural gap between the two professions, and lost opportunities for productive collaboration and better health. On December 6, 2018, in Washington, DC, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop titled Integrating Oral and General Health Through Health Literacy Practices. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
Logic modeling for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating results from an organizational oral-health literacy project by
A logic model is a graphic depiction of identified relationships between resources, activities, outputs, and outcomes of a project. It displays a sequence of actions that describes what the researchers plan to do and how investments link to results. In this project, we used the Taylor-Powell and Henert (2008) concept, which has five core components: (1) inputs that include resources and investments; (2) outputs that include activities and services; (3) outcomes that include short-term, mid-term, and long-term results or changes for individuals, groups, and organizations; (4) basic assumptions about the project; and (5) external factors in the environment that could potentially affect the project. This case provides an account of how we used this logic model for our project, whose aim was to assess oral-health literacy within a dental school environment using the 10 attributes of health-literate organizations published by the Institute of Medicine (now the Health and Medicine Division, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine) in 2012 as the framework. The goal was to determine whether it would be feasible to use a logic modeling approach for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating the level of oral-health literacy within an organization, and subsequently provide a "road map" for other organizations to similarly assess the level of oral-health literacy within their own organizations. This case study outlines the process used to evaluate the first of the 10 attributes of a health-literate organization and provides the methodological approach, limitations, and challenges we faced during the process.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy focuses on bringing together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to address challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. The roundtable serves to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding the issues of health literacy, sponsoring workshops to discuss approaches to resolve health literacy challenges. It also builds partnerships to move the field of health literacy forward by translating research findings into practical strategies for implementation. The Roundtable held a workshop March 29, 2012, to explore the field of oral health literacy. The workshop was organized by an independent planning committee in accordance with the procedures of the National Academy of Sciences. The planning group was composed of Sharon Barrett, Benard P. Dreyer, Alice M. Horowitz, Clarence Pearson, and Rima Rudd. The role of the workshop planning committee was limited to planning the workshop. Unlike a consensus committee report, a workshop summary may not contain conclusions and recommendations, except as expressed by and attributed to individual presenters and participants. Therefore, the summary has been prepared by the workshop rapporteur as a factual summary of what occurred at the workshop.

Researching the perceptions of Vietnamese migrant caregivers for an oral health literacy study in Australia by
This case study focuses on gaining access to Vietnamese migrant caregivers in South Western Sydney, Australia, for an oral health literacy study. We chose to approach this topic from the phenomenological framework which provided us with an opportunity to examine and understand non-English-speaking parents'/caregivers' perceptions related to existing oral health promotion materials. The case study starts by giving a brief overview of the research project and the complexities of carrying out a research project with migrant populations, followed by detailed description of the research process, access to participants, stakeholder involvement, building trust with participants, and data collection methods. We were able to obtain in-depth understanding using multiple data collection methods such as participant observation and in-depth interviews. By applying maximum variation technique in a stratified purposive sampling, we managed to capture a comprehensive sample of Vietnamese migrant caregivers in Greater Western Sydney. Therefore, we therefore recommend employing multiple qualitative techniques to conduct qualitative research with participants from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
