BorrowDirect, E-ZBorrow and Interlibrary Loan: Fines and Fees Explained

Libraries FAQ

Fines and Fees for Loans From Other Institutions

See the Libraries' COVID-19 page for the latest updates on library services.

Borrowing of physical materials from other institutions is suspended.  Requests for electronic articles and book chapters can be submitted.  To expedite delivery, please submit no more than one book chapter per request.  Requests for copies of entire books should be submitted via purchase request: https://faq.library.upenn.edu/friendly.php?slug=purchaserequest

All loans from other institutions, whether ordered through BorrowDirect, E-ZBorrow or Interlibrary Loan are subject to fines and fees if returned late:

  • Late fees:  $1 per day to a maximum of $25 (non-refundable)
  • Lost fine:  $125 applied at 28 days overdue (removed if loan returned before the lender sends a lost item invoice)
  • Lost item processing fee: $10 (non-refundable)

At 28 days overdue the library system will charge your account $160 ($125 + $25 + $10)  If the item is returned promptly the fine will be reduced to $35 (late and processing fees).

Returning your loans on time ensures that we maintain good relations with our lending partners.
