Getting the Most Out of SciFinder

A guide for using SciFinder

Exploring References

Refining Your Results

  • On the left, you can further filter your results by a number of different categories.
  • You can filter to both "Filter By" or "Exclude" results, depending on your selection at the top of the box.
  • Filters include Search Within Results, Document Type, Language, Publication Year, Author, Organization, Publication Name, Concept, CA Section, and Database.
  • Consider the filter "Search Within Results."  Using this, you can include or exclude certain text strings that may be in a result.  For instance, you could exclude results that include the text string "traditional medicine."  For example, you could include results that have "group A β-hemolytic Streptococcal" in the reference.
  • A search result in SciFinder-n filtering to include the text string "group A β-hemolytic Streptococcal"
  • You could also filter out the string "Toxic Shock Syndrome" if that is not applicable to your results.
  • A search result in SciFinder-n filtering to exclude "Toxic Shock Syndrome."
  • Note: Try not to overuse the Search Within Results function, as it identifies any use of the phrase in passing, so it could unintentionally filter results you want if you overuse it.
