A Keyword search looks for terms anywhere in a Franklin Catalog record describing a work.
Type a single word or multiple words into the search box, click "Search."
Default operator is AND - If two or more words are entered into the search box, the words will be joined with AND during the search.
charles dickens searches charles AND dickens
love and death searches love AND and AND death
Boolean Operators can be used in Keyword searches, but unlike for Keyword Expert searches, the operators MUST be capitalized.
sun and moon searches sun AND and AND stars

sun AND moon searches sun AND moon
Phrases - Use quotations marks. It is not possible to truncate words within " ".
"time travel"
Truncation - Use * to search the root of a word and variant endings.
recruit* gets recruit, recruits, recruiting, recruitment.
Proximity - To find words close to each other within a number of words, in any order.
"online learning"~5 finds online and learning within 5 words of each other.
Field Searching - field searching works in Keyword searches. (Beyond the assumed AND of Keyword searches, terms can only be combined with Boolean operators in Keyword Expert searches.

All the functionality of the Keyword search described also works for the Keyword Expert Search except for a few elements:
Boolean Operators - The Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) may be use in Keyword Expert Searches. Operators can be entered in lower or upper case in Keyword Expert searches. (They must be upper case in a Keyword only search.)

Parenthesis - can be used to control the order of search operations:

An Author Keyword search is a keyword search of the author fields. Boolean Operators may only be used if capitalized. To search by author either:
Enter two names in any order, terms will be connected by AND:

Enter a name with an initial, the initial will be searched as a separate term:

Enter a comma and a space between names, the two names will be combined with AND, but the terms in the order searched will be weighted higher in the results:

Use quotation marks around search terms, the results can vary, as the terms are searched as adjacent, in the order given.
"russo richard" gets more hits than "richard russo"
To do a proximity search, use the tilde symbol "~" and a number, after a search in quotes
"william f buckley"~2 finds william AND f AND buckley within 2 words of each other.
If you search only a last name and get too many results, use the Author/Creator limit on the left to narrow your search to a specific author.
When you searcha last name and truncated initial (hardy t*) the search is translated to hardy AND t* and is an ineffective search. Use the Author Browse search instead

A title keyword search is a keyword search of the title fields. Boolean Operators may only be used if capitalized. To search by title:
Enter two words in any order, terms will be automatically connected by AND, although adjacency will be weighted higher in the results.

Subject Heading Keyword searches are not left anchored; they are keyword searches of the subject fields. Boolean Operators may only be used if capitalized. Enter Search terms, terms must be in the subject fields of the record

If your search gets too many results, use the Subject or Classification limits to narrow your search.
