Using Electronic Resources

Browser Settings

Browser settings can sometimes cause access problems. Enabling certain options can improve or restore functionality. Below are optimal settings for the most popular browsers.

Enable Cookies

Many resources require the use of cookies.  To enable cookies:

  • Google Chrome - 3 Vertical dots for Google Chrome settings > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party Cookies > Allow third-party cookies OR Block third-party cookies in Incognito mode
  • Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Edge 3 horizontal dots for settings  > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended)
  • Mozilla Firefox - Firefox 3 horizontal lines icon for Options > Settings > Privacy & Security > Uncheck: Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed
  • Safari -  Settings > Privacy > Deselect “Block all cookies.”

Most browsers allow you to delete all or some cookies, and to manage permissions.

Disable Pop-up Blockers

Some e-resources require the use of pop-ups for content delivery.  Be sure the pop-up blocker allows pop-ups generally, or from a specific vendor.

  • Google Chrome -  3 Vertical dots for Google Chrome settings > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Popups and redirects > Select "Sites can send pop-ups and use redirects"
  • Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Edge 3 horizontal dots for settings  > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Under All permissions, select Pop-ups and redirects > Turn off the Block toggle.
  • Mozilla Firefox - Firefox 3 horizontal lines icon for Options > Options > Privacy & Security >  Under Permissions un-check "Block pop-up windows"
  • Safari - Preferences > Security > Uncheck Block Pop-up windows

Enable JavaScript

This is a scripting language commonly used to make web pages interactive.  Most browsers enable JavaScript by default.

  • Google Chrome -  3 Vertical dots for Google Chrome settings > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > under Content select Javascript and toggle the "sites can use JavaScript" to allowed
  • Mozilla Firefox - Enabled by default
  • Safari - Preferences > Security > Enable JavaScript
