Using Electronic Resources

Campus VPNs

University Client Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Install Global Protect application

The University Client VPN uses Palo Alto's GlobalProtect software to provide off-campus users encrypted and authenticated access to the PennNet network using Two-Step Verification. This VPN generally puts a home computer virtually on the campus network, so users can have the same network experience from a remote location as they do while connected to AirPennNet or by plugging into a physical port on campus. Using this VPN can also simplify downloading PDFs into citation management programs (Zotero, EndNote) when off-campus.

Problems with using other VPNs

Some Penn schools and departments provide VPNs to their community to provide secure remote access to specific data center(s) on campus. The use of these VPNs can inadvertently prevent access to library subscription e-resources.

This is because these VPNs are generally configured to direct traffic in specific directions only; this then causes EZproxy to determine that a user is on-campus, does not prompt a login, and then directs the user to the restricted resource without a Penn credential, at which point access is denied.
